Potato bonaza

Went a bit potato mad this year and tried a stack of different varieties. Kid and sweetshop spring to mind!

So in this year's round-up we have:
  • Edzell Blue (second early; I think! Was a bit naughty as this one's care of Sainsburys): violet blue flesh with a very floury and dry texture making it ideal for baking, frying, mashing and sautéing - though served as a boiled potato it can be disappointing (due to its floury nature).
  • Anya (second early): love these. Nutty and fab for salads.
  • Wilja (opps! Another second early): Never had these before; bought on a whim in the garden centre after recognising the name. Shame I didn't buy an early.
  • Maris Piper (maincrop)
  • Pink Fir Apple (maincrop)
The problem I have is knowing when to harvest. The Urban Veg gang have some handy tips:

Early:

  • Take about 10-14 weeks to crop
  • Good for summer new potatoes
  • Less prone to pest attacks
  • Great if you’ve not got much space to grow within14-18 weeks

Second Early:

  • Take about to crop
  • Produce summer potatoes (Mainly in July)
  • More prone to pest attacks than Early varieties
  • Less productive with less space

Maincrop:

  • Take about 18-20 weeks to crop
  • Produce potatoes suitable to store over the winter months (can be lifted from July until October)
  • Require more space than the other varieties
  • As they spend more time in the ground, they are more prone to pest attacks (especially Potato Blight, which has a main “season” starting in last summer)
