All the green things are waking up

Only being able to go up to the allotment at the weekends sucks. The upside is that does mean that I really notice the changes that are happening right now. The weeds are making a concerted bid for bed domination, but some of the other permanent residents - blackcurrant, blueberry, and the two weeny little damson saplings all now have shoots in various stages of development.

The rhubarb plants are well on the way to growing into the thugs I've come to know and love! Last week they looked like this:

This week? Twice that size already!

Some unexpected guests have also rocked up to the party:

Not really sure who they are so I've no intention of taking them home.

I already had some garlic that has been overwintering, but always one to hedge my bets I've planted more today. I bothered to do a tiny bit of research and plumped for a hard-necked variety called "music" - I'm intrigued by the idea of harvesting scapes later in the year. The other is a soft-neck special from Lidl called Cassablanca (it was there and it was cheap!). I may have a glut on my hands later in the year so it's a good job both T and I like cooking with garlic.

As always Rubes came along to supervise:

Sorry about the crappy photos - only had the phone to snap with.
